2020 Competition Delayed – Official Club Update 01/04

As many of you would have received via email, the FFA has decided to extend the postponement of the season until 31 May. CEO of the FFA said, “As a sport, we must continue to undertake our civic duty as a responsible citizen and do everything we can to contribute to the national efforts to slow down the spread of COVID-19. Football people are resilient, have a strong moral compass and, consequently, I am sure our community will understand this position.”

As a club we are working through what this means  with our association partners for the upcoming season, with every intention of playing in 2020 – we are still hopeful for a full or slightly modified season. Please be patient as work through this situation – we will always put our clubs players and members interests first and foremost, whether that be safety, development, fun or community.

You may also have noticed that our fields have goals up and cricket pitches covered, which is a nice sign that our local councils still believe we will be playing football this year. I must state that the new laws passed down from federal govt mean that you are not to be doing any training, with any teams caught would need to be reported.

I hope you are all safe, and doing what you can to stay fit and healthy during this crisis. Please see below a great tool to help you stay connected to the football community.

In order to help the grassroots football community stay active and connected throughout the temporary suspension period, FFA recently launched an online Skills Hub, developed in association with each of Australia’s nine Member Federations. To access the Skills Hub and get involved with the #PlayAtHomeChallenge, please visit www.playfootball.com.au/skills-hub.

Some further clarity has been provided by NWSF around the dates for the upcoming season – we think it is good news and support the efforts in dealing with these unprecedented circumstances.

The NWSF Board has decided to commence the season on the weekend of 2/3 May. This will enable teams to fit in some training and trial matches beforehand, assuming football activities can resume on 14 April, and also takes into account Anzac Day on 25 April.

The good news is that we can fit a FULL Premiership season in with this start date.

NWSF is working very hard to update the competition calendars and fixtures soon, and we will keep all members advised of developments in what is a rapidly changing situation.

Dear Club Members,

Today senior officials from the FFA announced their decision to delay all football competition until the 14th of April 2020 due to the ongoing Corona Virus / COVID-19 situation.

Unfortunately, grassroots football is not immune to the present situation which is affecting all parts of our community and society from our workplaces, schools and how we interact socially. As a club, we will focus on understanding the impact to players, coaches and members whose safety and health remain at the heart of everything we do.

West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Football Club has been in close communication with North West Sydney Football to work through the contingency plan for this unprecedented situation.

It is our full intention to play a competitive season in 2020. We understand better than most that football can be a wonderful outlet for what has been a challenging start to the year for a lot of Australians.

From a club perspective, our 2020 season is off to a strong start, with increased player numbers and teams, excellent engagement with our coaching programs and our fields bouncing back from the recent dry weather to be in great condition for training and games.

We will continue to keep you updated as we receive information and ensure we are on hand to answer your questions in relation the upcoming season.

In the meantime, we will need your understanding across the following –

  • All training and trial games as of the 17th of March postponed in line with the guidance from the FFA.
  • The 2020 season is currently delayed until the 14th of April in line with the guidance from the FFA.
  • All WPHCFC club associated events and meetings will be postponed or cancelled until further notice.
  • Club merchandise and gear sales will be unavailable until the 14th of April.

As a club we want nothing more than to return to operations as normal, and by adhering to above guidelines feel as though this gives us the best opportunity to do so.

With Easter and ANZAC Day holidays due to disrupt the start of the season anyway, our hope is that the season will experience minimal disruptions when it is safe to get underway. In the meantime, please stay fit and healthy and I look forward to seeing you all on the pitch as soon as possible.

Thank you for your understanding,

Michael Pompeii
